The Miss Cuba or Miss Universe Cuba beauty pageant and organization that selects Cuba's official representative for the Miss Universe Pageant—one of the Big 4 international beauty pageants.

Between 1952 and 1967 Cuba partcipated in the Miss Universe pageant 14 times.

The only participant to place, as 3rd runner up, was Maria Rosa Gamio Fernández.

This year Cuba will return to the Miss Universe Pageant however, Miss Cuba will be crowned in Miami, Fl. and not Cuba.

Cuba's women's national volleyball team was the first team to break the Japan's and USSR's dominance in the women's volleyball world by winning the 1978 World Women's Volleyball Championship.

Cuba team dominated the world in the last decade of the last century, winning 8 times in row as FIVB World Champions in straight (6th World Cup in 1991, Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, 12th World Championship in 1994, 7th World Cup in 1995, Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, 13th World Championship in 1998, 8th World Cup in 1999, Sydney Olympic Games in 2000).

The team's nickname is Espectaculares Morenas del Caribe / The Spectacular (black) Caribbean Girls".

Baseball was introduced in Cuba in the 1860's prim

Baseball was introduced in Cuba in the 1860's primarily by Nemesio Guillot a Cuban who attended Spring Hill College in Alabama, with his brother Ernesto. They returned to Cuba and founded the first baseball team in Cuba, the Habana Base Ball Club. American sailors who ported in Cuba also helped with spreading baseball across the island.

Concerned that Cubans had begun to prefer baseball to bullfights, led the Spanish colonizers to ban the game throughout Cuba

Eventually baseball games resumed. The first organized match in Cuba took place in Matanzasin 1874.

In 1899, the Cuban League of professional players, were the first Latin American team to tour the United States. The Spanish–American War brought more opportunities for Cubans to play against top teams from the United States. In addition, in 1900 the Cuban League admitted black players. Soon many of the best players from the Northern American Negro leagues were playing on integrated teams in Cuba. Beginning in 1908, Cuban teams scored a number of successes in competition against major league baseball teams.

In 1959, the Castro Revolution fundamentally changed how Cuban baseball was organized. The government made baseball a symbol of excellence & used it to encourage nationalism.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, which was Cuba's primary financial trading partner, led many Cuban players to defect to the USA due to harrowing economic conditions. Even Fidel Castro admitted that it was hard to prevent the baseball stars from defecting

In 1999 the Cuba national team played a two game exhibition series against the Baltimore Orioles.

In December 2014 the Baltimore Orioles played 2 games against the Cuba national team. Each country won 1 game. Barack Obama, Raul Castro and Jackie Robinson's widow attended the game.

Cuba's baseball team won the Gold Medal at both the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

As of March 29, 2024, 18 Cuban players were on MLB opening day rosters,

Interesting note: Fidel Castro in the 1940's was a keen baseballer who pitched for the University of Havana.

Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 . He was a journalist, short - story writer and novelist. He is known for an understated style that significantly influenced later 20th-century writers. He is often romanticized for his outspoken and blunt public image and adventurous lifestyle. Most of Hemingway's works were published between the mid-1920s and mid-1950s, including two non-fiction works, six short-story collections and seven novels. His works have become classics of American literature; he was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature.

He maintained a winter residence in Cuba, Finca Vigia (lookout farm) in the 1940s and 1950s. The 15-acre property that is 15 miles from Havana is now maintaned as a museum and research center. A popular attraction for tourists.

His last day in Cuba was on July 25, 1960. Throught the following year he was in and out of Mental Helath institutes (complicated by heavy drinking throughout most of his life). He killed himself with his favorite shotgun in the early morning hours of July 2, 1961. Interestingly, his father, brother Leicester, sister Ursula and grandaughter Margaux Hemingway also committed suicide.

Our guests enjoying an afternoon at Playa Pilar, named one of the best 10 beaches in the world by various magazines. This is one of the most spectacular beaches in the Caribbean! This pristine beach is located at the north-western end of the island of Cayo Guillermo. Playa Pilar is about 1 km long and is facing north. It’s made of powdery white sand, and Its shallow and calm waters are perfect for swimming and water sports. There is a restaurant on the beach that serves delicious lobsters, albeit pricey.

Your best bet for tracking down the tiny bee humingbird is to visit a forest edge hung heavily with bromeliads ans vines. There, amongst the flowers — if you squint hard enough — you’ll find it.

Even among hummingbirds, the Bee Hummingbird, which can be found only in Cuba, is an absolute miniature. This tiny bird measures a mere two & a quarter inches long and are often mistaken for bees. They weigh less than a dime, about two grams. That’s half the weight of the hummersfound in the US. The female builds a nest that is barely an inch across. Her eggs are the size of a coffee bean.

In flight, this tiny bird's wings beat 80 times a second., and during a courtship flight, they beat up to 200 times per second!

The Cuban Flag was designed in 1849 and officially adopted May 20, 1902. It is a Lone Star flag and is in the stars and stripes flag family. The poet Miguel Teurbe Tolón along with Narciso Lopez designed the flag.

On May 20, 1902, the day Cuba became an officially independent republic, General Máximo Gómez hoisted the flag on the flagpole of the castles of the Tres Reyes del Morro, in Havana; thereby with this act he sealed the end of the Cuban revolution against the Spanish Crown; the end of struggle for Cuban independence, and also justifying the sacrifice so many offered to make this dream become reality.

Surprisinhly the Cuban flag has remained unchanged even after Fidel's 1959 Cuban Revolution, which established the present-day communist state of the Republic of Cuba.

Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz Telles (18 Novem

Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz Telles (18 November 1907 – 13 July 2003), though known professionally as Compay Segundo, was a Cuban trova guitarist, singer & composer.

Compay which means "compadre"and Segundo because he was always second voice in his musical partnerships, was born in Siboney, Cuba & moved to Santiago de Cuba at age 9. His first gig was in the Municipal Band of Santiago de Cuba.

At approxametly age 27, he moved to Havana where he also played the clarinet in a Municipal Band. He learned to play guitar and the tres, which became his usual instruments. In order to fill the harmonic jump between the Spanish guitar & the tres, Compay invented the armónico, a 7 stringed instrument similar to the guitar.

In 1947 he formed a a duo with his friend Lorenzo. By the 1950s he was well known as the second voice, & tres player, in Los Compadres, one of the most successful Cuban duos of his generation.

International fame came in 1997, with the release of Ry Cooder's the Buena Vista Social Club album, a very successful recording which won several Grammy awards. Compay also appeared in Wim Wenders film of the same title.

Segundo's most famous composition, the song "Chan Chan," the opening track on the album Buena Vista Social Club, a four-chord son cuban song. "Chan Chan" was recorded by Segundo himself multiple times as well as by many other Latin artists.

He predicted he would live to be 115 but unfortunately, he died of kidney failure in Havana at the age of 95.

In 1906 the Coca Cola Company began bottling operations in Cuba, making the island one of the first countries to bottle the cola outside of the USA. Although Cuba experienced plenty of political turmoil during the first half of the 20th century, business ran more or less smoothly until the Cuban Revolution of 1959.

Fidel Castro regularly preached about the evils of capitalism. Accordingly, he began nationalizing both foreign and domestic company assets shortly after assuming power in Cuba. He proclaimed that the presence of American companies in Cuba symbolized U.S. imperialism, and they had to be nationalized to protect Cuba’s sovereignty.

Coca Cola made the decision to leave the island shortly after the seizure of of the company's assets. It ended their operations on the island in 1960.

The first picture was adapted from an actual photograph of Fidel eating Chinese food and drinking a Coke. It was taken the same year that Coca Cola was forced out of Cuba.

On the opposite side of the harbor from Old Havana

On the opposite side of the harbor from Old Havana sits El Morro Fort. Built-in 1589 in response to raids on the city, the Fort protected the entrance of the harbor with a chain strung out across the water, known as the boom defense to the fort at La Punta. The Morro fortress shares its name with Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca in Santiago de Cuba and the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In this case, the Spanish "morro" means a rock that is visible from the sea and serves as a navigational landmark. The fortress is part of the UNESCO Old Havana World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1982 for its historical importance in the European conquest of the New World and its unique mix of architecture.

Boxing is a popular sport in Cuba, second to Baseball. It originally started in Cuba as a tourist attraction principally as championship fights between North American Boxers during tourist season. The first domestic professional fight in Havana accored in 1909. The following year a Chilean by the name John Budinich started Havanas's first boxing academy. In 1912 the government banned boxing because of violence on the streets between whites and blacks. Boxing had to go under ground as it grew popular throughout the country. Despite the banishment, boxing represented for the lower classes a potential ticket out of poverty as well as reliable entertainment.

Recognizing boxing's potential to take families out of poverty and to entertain crowds, on December 13, 1921, Cuba decided to give boxing another chance and legitimized boxing with the establishment of the National commission on boxing and Wrestling. The lift on the ban brought tourist dollars with the bouts. Years later a national boxing academy was established to train talented athletes. The next decade Golden Gloves amateur competition had also arrived.

Cuba had several professional world champions by 1959, all considered to be the founding fathers of boxing as well as national heroes of the island. These fighters included Eligio “Kid Chocolate” Sardinas, Gerardo “Kid Gavilán” González, and Benny Paret.

Cuban boxers were dominant in the Olympics and all major international amateur competitions by the 80's, Throughout its Olympic history, Cuba has won 78 boxing medals (41 gold) in boxing, second place to the United States' 117 medals (50 Gold). Cuba's boxers Félix Savón and Teofilo Stevenson are the only two three-time Olympic champions.
